Traditionally elixirs (cordials) were herbal infused drinks, often sipped before or after dinner as a digestive tonic. They are a milder sweetened version of alcohol based tinctures. Herbal syrups are a great way to administer not so pleasant tasting herbs to kids and adults alike, or a great way to let your favorite herbs come to life in beverages and food dishes.

Now a days you find elixirs and syrups for just about anything. For example: flu and cold, insomnia, celebratory and aphrodisiacs. They make a great host gifts at dinners and for the holidays. Elixirs have a high alcohol content, so they should be ingested in small sips out of port or madeira glasses or you can make a cocktail and margaritas with them. You can also use elixirs and syrups when cooking – adding them to desserts similar to a vanilla extract, or to flavor marinades and glazes. Pour it over ice cream and fruit, or to pancake batter.

Note: cordials/elixirs and syrups are not considered medicinally as strong as alcohol tinctures. However, they are good tonics and great for parties.
